Pepper spray is the number one choice for self-defense by more private citizens than any other product. Using defense spray is very easy, even for someone who has never used it before. Because pepper spray can stop an attack and even save your life, it is vital that you know how to use it properly. Here are a few important things to keep in mind when you use pepper spray:

(1) Keep your pepper spray accessible. Place the canister in your bag where you can easily get at it. Emergency situations happen so fast requiring you to think and act immediately. If you hide your pepper spray in an unorganized bag, there is a chance that you will miss it when you need to use it. Your attacker is not going to politely wait while you dig it out of the bowels of your purse or pocket. So keep it in a place where you can easily get it when you need it.

(2) If you ever have an encounter with an aggressor do not hesitate for one moment to use your pepper spray. Any hesitation on your part can and probably will be perceived as a weakness by your attacker. Pepper spray is not going to permanently injure the villain, it's merely going to give you enough time to get away to safety.

(3) Make sure you're ready to spray and that your aim is at the assailant's face, and then press the button down firmly, with no hesitation. If your assailant does not become immobilized completely within a few seconds, repeat spraying at his face to successfully render him defenseless. At this point, you should run from your assailant and escape.

(4) When using pepper spray it is natural to want to close your eyes if you are afraid some of the spray might also effect you. Fight this impulse. Do not close your eyes. It is crucial that you keep them open throughout the entire face-off. Closing your eyes could cause you to miss the face of your aggressor.

(5) In order to use pepper spray effectively in a self defense situation, you need to practice, practice, practice. Buy an extra pepper spray and conduct practice drills in an outdoor environment with a target. Actually "waste" it by discharging practice sprays to gauge the range of your product and improve your spraying accuracy. If a dangerous situation arises, the less time you spend thinking about how to use your pepper spray, the better. If you have already practiced a similar situation, you can have your defense spray out in less than a second, quickly taking down your aggressor.

(6) Timing your pepper spray is so important. There's much more to using pepper spray than point and shoot! It's best to catch your attacker off guard. Refrain from immediately aiming your spray until you're actually ready to fire. Wait until your attacker is in range and you know the spray will hit him fully in the face and incapacitate him! The objective is to surprise him before he can have a chance to react.
