Any time you are going camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, or any other activity out in mother nature especially in areas known to be bear country it is always smart to take a canister of bear spray along with you. Bear pepper spray is referred to by many different names: bear spray, mace bear spray, and bear repellent spray. They're all essentially the same thing. Bear mace is an animal deterrent used to ward off an angry bear or some other large redatory animal that is threatening your well being.
Bear mace spray is made from a naturally occurring, harmless substance found in hot pepper plants called Oleoresin Capsicum (OC). OC is the active component that makes peppers hot. Bear pepper spray is similar to the type of defense spray used by humans to protect themselves from unruly people. The main difference between pepper spray for humans and bear repellent spray is that bear spray can shoot farther, cover a wider area and is powerful enough to deter an angry bear. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates bear sprays pursuant to an Act of Congress. Look for the EPA registration and establishment numbers, usually found at the bottom of the front label; only bear sprays will have this information.
Bear repellent spray works by causing temporary blindness in the animal and a burning sensation in it's nasal passages. The beast will quickly retreat as it becomes confused, disoriented and unable to smell you. Bear mace provides a non-lethal way to stop the grizzly encounter and discourage any future interest. The effects wear off after about half an hour with no permanent damage. By that time either you or the bear will long gone.
It's a good idea to make it a habit of taking bear pepper mace along every time you go out into the wild. Like with most things, however, the key to using it effectively is to know how to properly use it. If a bear is getting too close or charging, create a cloud of bear spray in front of you and the instant the bear hits that cloud it will fall on its haunches, tuck tail and run.
